Summer Tree ID start:10:00 ** NOT LIVE ** Trees are deeply rooted in our culture and play a vital ecological role in the landscape, and are also, of course, often beautiful and awe-inspiring. Telling one from another can help bring them, and the countryside, to life. On this workshop you will learn how to identify some of our native tree species - from the shape of leaves, texture of bark and the overall form of the tree. We will spend time both in the classroom and outside in the parkland close to the Hall, taking a closer look at some of the wonderful specimens here. The English countryside is home to many beautiful species, and on the Doddington Estate there are some old and interesting examples of oak, beech, sweet chestnut, sycamore, hawthorn, poplar and more. This is a practical workshop that will focus on native tree species, the types you are likely to come across in the English countryside. As well as identification skills you will also learn about some of the natural and cultural history associated with different trees. No prior knowledge is needed.Time spent in the classroom (approximately 1.5 hours) will be combined with time in the parkland/woodland (approximately 1.5-2 hours). We will be outside whatever the weather, walking to view trees on paths that are firm but uneven in places. So appropriate footwear and clothing is essential.Your guide, Guy Petheram, has been involved with plants for over twenty years. He has a particular love for trees and wild plants, and is passionate about sharing his knowledge. No prior knowledge is needed.Key information:- All guests must be over 16yrs. 16-18 year olds must be accompanied by a responsible adult- No dogs permitted. Much of our wildlife enjoys their entire life on the ground and dogs may disturb what we hope to see- Ample free parking is available at Doddington – please see map that also shows EV charging locations- We regret the surfaces are incredibly uneven so we cannot cater for wheelchairs- Please dress appropriately for the weather and ground conditions. Long trousers and long sleeves along with suitable footwear are a requirement for a comfortable visit.
